The spokesman for President Mohammed Morsi says the Egyptian leader told Iran's foreign minister in a meeting in Cairo that relations between the two countries are being hindered by Tehran's support for Syria's regime.
Spokesman Yasser Ali says Morsi told the Iranian minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, in a meeting Tuesday that as president he cannot ignore public opinion in Egypt against the Syrian regime "that uses harsh language and violence against people."
Egypt and Iran have not had full diplomatic ties for decades, although there has been a rapprochement since Morsi was elected following Egypt's own 2011 uprising.
Sentiment is strong among Egyptians against Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose regime they hold primarily responsible for an 18-month conflict in which 23,000 people have been killed, according to estimates by activists.
