Report: German Police Had Lead on Neo-Nazis in '02

A German newspaper reports that police received a tipoff on the whereabouts of three fugitive neo-Nazis years before they emerged as the main suspects in a series of far-right murders.

The Welt am Sonntag weekly says an informant in the far-right scene told his Berlin police handler the location of the three core members of the so-called National Socialist Underground in 2002.

The NSU allegedly killed 10 people from 2000 to 2007 while its members were being sought for other crimes. Two of the trio were found dead and one was arrested last November.

German media have reported that the informant worked for Berlin police from 2000 until 2011.

A police spokesman declined to confirm the reports Sunday but said officials would make a statement in Parliament on Tuesday.
