A number of scientists at the University of Pennsylvania discovered five new genes suspected to be triggers Alzheimer's disease, disorders affecting memory.
They hope the findings published in the journal Nature Genetics may help doctors predict who is most at risk of developing Alzheimer's. It could also facilitate the anticipation to suppress the amount of people with this disease.
As quoted from page Health24, this is the largest study involving 300 scientists from the two consortia. Studies done by combing the genome of 54 thousand people, most suffering from Alzheimer's.
"Previously, there were five genes was found. Now added a further five MS4A namely, ABCA7, CD33, EPHA1, and CD2AP, "said Gerad Schellenberg, one of the researchers.
In that study, identifiable pieces of DNA that contribute to Alzheimer's. The findings also show the character as Alzheimer's disease can be inherited. However, it does not mean they do not have a line on the family history of Alzheimer's could be spared from this disease.
Alzheimer's attacks are caused by unwanted proteins form plaques in several regions of the brain. This plaque then destroy neurons and trigger the destruction of brain tissue. Alzheimer's is characterized by symptoms such as memory loss or dementia, and behavioral disorders.
According Schelleberg, this finding will open up the idea to create drugs that can halt and even prevent the progression of this disease. By finding new genes, molecular biologists can proceed with research to uncover the mechanisms of disease.
"The biggest contribution of the present invention further makes us understand what exactly the mechanisms that underlie Alzheimer penyebaba. There is a very important new pathway for the disease process, "Schellenberg said.
Exposure to the study also revealed that Alzheimer's sufferers has doubled every five years. Alzheimer's affects 13 percent of people aged over 65 years and up to 50 percent of people aged over 85 years. Azheimer as much as 90 percent of cases occur through an unexpected attack.
