Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) or restless leg syndrome could be bad for health. Because they often experience restless leg syndrome could be a sign of a hidden heart problem.
Symptoms of restless legs syndrome is usually characterized by trench foot, or leg movements during sleep. The emergence of spasms in the legs can be a sign of more serious heart problems.
Those who experience this syndrome are more likely to have thickening of heart problems. This condition makes them more susceptible to heart problems, strokes and death, according to a study by Mayo Clinic physicians.
"We're not saying there is a causal relationship, it's just restless legs may be signs of heart problems that must be known and considered the doctors and patients," said Dr. Arshad Jahangir at the Mayo Clinic, Arizona.
Jahangir, as the leader of the study, published the results of his research at a conference of the American College of Cardiology in New Orleans.
Restless leg syndrome is estimated to strike millions of people around the world. "This study is one of the studies that look at how the syndrome affects health," cardiology expert, Dr. Ralph Brindis of the University of California, San Francisco.
The study involved 584 people diagnosed with restless legs syndrome. As many as 45 percent of participants who move their feet to the intensity of at least 35 times per hour tend to have thickening of the heart, than others. The study lasted three years.
People with restless legs should not panic. All you need do is talk to your doctor to handle. "Ask your doctor if any tests necessary to find out the process of thickening of the heart," said Jahangir.
